I have been interested in learning ASL for some time now but am new to wargames only having played Starship Troopers. I was wondering if there was somewhere or if someone had a PDF of the Starter Kit #1 rule book that I could download so I can see how complicated the rules are. I do not want to spend 25 dollars plus shipping unless I have an idea of if I can figure out the rules or if I want to play a game as complex as ASL.
I do not know of any ASL clubs near me where I can learn to play. Our local game club is mostly interested in CCGs and not wargames.

I was wondering if there was somewhere or if someone had a PDF of the Starter Kit #1 rule book that I could download so I can see how complicated the rules are. I do not want to spend 25 dollars plus shipping unless I have an idea of if I can figure out the rules or if I want to play a game as complex as ASL. Given that all the game components are accessible for play on VASL, the rules ARE the game, and are not available except by purchase.
If you are interested in simulating WW2 historic battles at the tactical level, there is simply no finer game, IMHO. Given the enourous support available, you will have no problem learning the game (ASLSK) at all.

My recommendation is to buy ASLSK1 without the blink of an eye and then use my two tutorial Examples of Play to see it all fleshed out, thought by thought, move by move, roll by roll. You will LOVE it!

If you don't like it, wait for it to go out of Print (shortly, it is about due) and sell it or trade for profit.,shop around too. Unfortunately, you gotta pay to play as far as ASL/SK is concerned. There's a PDF of Jay Richardson's excellent excellent (yeah, they're THAT good) ASLSK tutorials available here: Read the first chapter, maybe even d/l the VASL mod and push the counters along with it.at that point, you'll know whether you will like it or not. Even if you decide to buy SK1, you should STILL read these tutorials, they are a Godsend to the noob. Not to mention, if you decide you hate it after buying the SK, you'll easily recoup your $$, or even turn a profit, when it gets hard to find again.and it WILL. Presents some basic rules in a manner similar to the way the SK rulebook is written.
Nice resource. However, if one starts with full-blown ASL (what this file introduces) with little-to-no experience in tactical level simulation, they will likely wince from the complexity, plus it's quite an initial investment (almost $200 for both the rule book and the first module Beyond Valor).
You would do VERY good to start with the first starter kit (ASLSK1) avilble at: While it's called 'A Free Introductory Guide to ASL', there's little in the document not covered in the SK#1 rulebook - my point is to give the OP a taste of what reading and deciphering the SK#1 rules might be like (though of course the SK rulebooks cover more ground, with more illustrated examples etc.), not to suggest he jump into full ASL.
