Does the front crank seal come in and out the front of the case or does the front bull gear cover have to come off? I looked at your link quickly and saw a cat and isx seal tool both around 500 bucks.

I would think if i replace the crank seal i shouldn't need to do another one for quite a long time unless i buy another truck. So it seems renting or a service truck might be the way to go. Otherwise if labor on the whole job is less than the cost of the tool to do the job i might consider letting them do the whole job, although putting my truck in someone else s shop for anything normally means additional down time as well to try to get scheduled in somewhere so that might not be much of a option either. Right now its not leaking much just enough to make the front of the motor a bit messy and greasy so i assume i have some time to try to get it figured out. It comes off without taking the cover off. The seal is 2 pieces, the seal and a wear sleeve that is tight on the crank, I usually get the seal off by prying with a typical seal puller.

The I use a flat 1/8' pin punch on the wear sleeve. Hit it in a few places to stretch it, then it will slide off. Do NOT use a pointy punch or try to cut it off. Installation is critical, you cannot separate the seal, both pieces, need to stay together and be pressed in to the correct depth at the same time.

This is why the proper tool is important. I don't know what year or how many miles, but bull gear bearings were an issue on the older S60's with high miles. Something to look into because you'll need a new seal when you do a bull gear.

If you have a roller bearing style gear with over 800,000 miles on the gear, consider it now. If it's the newer compact style geartrain, I wouldn't worry about it until well over a million miles. I think my bull gear is good, i don't know the history of the bull gear but iv had the water pump and the air compressor off in the past and inspected the bull gear threw where they mounted and everything looked good. No play when prying against the bull gear and none of the gear teeth have any visible wear. I do have over 1million miles on the truck though. It was in-framed nearly 10 years ago but was a farm truck for most of that time and didn't see much millage.
